The Hungry Month of March

March is always the month when our own stock of home canned and frozen food is depleting, and when even the imported produce available in the stores looks tired and unappetizing.

While we hungrily look forward to the first greens of spring – still a couple of months away yet – here is a list of our own food that we still have on hand this time of year.

In the freezer:  tomatoes, rhubarb, sweet bell peppers, pureed pumpkin, fava beans, Italian prune plums, and spinach.

On the canning shelves: cherries (not our cherries but I canned them), peaches, grape jelly, plum jam, whole plums, bread and butter pickles, salsa, strawberry rhubarb jam.
